The investigation took on an entirely new direction in March of 2012, after connecting Edwards to California in 1955. Edwards’ ability to set up others and taunt the press was mastered in San Francisco, 13 years before the start of the Zodiac.

On Thursday, April 28, 1955, three weeks after Edwards had escaped in Ohio, 14-year-old Stephanie Bryan was abducted in Berkeley, California at 3:30 pm. She had left Willard Junior High School on her usual walk home. She was the daughter of a well-known radiologist, Dr. Charles S. Bryan Jr. Over a dozen witnesses observed the abduction and subsequent fight with her abductor on Mt. Diablo Boulevard. Three witnesses saw the suspect beating her with a flashlight. That’s the last time she was seen alive.

On Sunday, May 1st Stephanie’s French text book was found on the side of Franklin Canyon Road in Contra Costa County, north of the Bay area. Then, on May 2nd, a ransom note arrived at the Bryan home.
